An effective trade show set-up doesn’t just happen. It takes precision planning and excellent execution. You have to choose the logo items and display pieces carefully with one eye on budget and the other on design.
You might have made a decision on the items you need to make your trade show display stand , stand out amidst the crowd, but you still aren’t done planning. There are still some important choices to make such as design, graphics, colours, and materials. The materials used in your banner stand displays can elevate your design or cheapen it so choose wisely!
The material your banner is made of dictates to a large extent what can be printed on your banner display. There are two fabrics most often used in trade show banner stands: vinyl and fabric. Each has its uses and a unique set of pros and cons. You need to plan materials first so that the rest falls easily into place.
Vinyl
Vinyl (or PVC) is a tough, thick material that is weather-resistant and opaque with a smooth surface finish. Cleaning can be handled with soap and water or many household cleaners but it must be done by hand, not machine. It’s a good choice for outdoor venues since it’s not damaged by rain or wind and dirt can be hosed off.
There are certain drawbacks to using vinyl. It’s heavy and it can wrinkle in storage or transit. The fold lines and wrinkles are very difficult and sometimes impossible to straighten out. Large-scale banners can be difficult to transport and hang with a small staff. The portable banner stands favored by many trade show pros can be overwhelmed by the weight. Up close, vinyl has a less expensive, more utilitarian look so it’s best used outdoors or higher up on walls.
Fabric
Fabric is a more modern choice for banner stand displays. It’s is much lighter in weight and can be made in either opaque or sheer variations. Wrinkles can be quickly pressed or steamed out with ease. There are many options in fabric from durable polyesters to high-end silk so there’s something to match every budget.
Color choices are endless and fabric printing is practically a science now. Dye sublimation and direct printing render razor-sharp text and life-like photographs. Fabric banners are easily held by lightweight stands.
Fabrics aren’t quite as durable in long-term, outdoor settings. However, recent innovations in man-made fibers are making fabric banners weather- and water-proof just like vinyl. Fabric gives a higher-end impression, especially when viewed up close. Using the same or similar fabric on banners, table tops, and backdrops will lend your display a cohesive, professional look.
Plan your trade show display materials for the events you will attend. Consider the unique benefits of each material and find what suits your needs best.
